The Spoofing Scam

Fraudsters are always finding ways to lure members into disclosing their personal and financial information. Protecting our members’ privacy and security is important to us.

What You Should Know

Some Dirigo FCU members have been contacted by fraudsters using a spoofed 1-800 line pretending to be your financial institution.

These phone calls are regarding “fraudulent debit card transactions” in an attempt to gain your personal or account information.

What is Spoofing?

Spoofing is the act of disguising a communication from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source.

Fraudsters have spoofed caller ID systems or assign any area code to a phone number, so it appears to be legitimate like a 1- 800 number or a local number.

Prevention

Dirigo FCU will not request personal or financial information from you via phone call. This includes, but not limited to:

  • Social Security Number
  • Account Number
  • Debit Card Information

Being pressured to give out private information over the phone is a Red Flag.

Always hang up and contact the credit union directly to report this activity.
